Fibreworks 2014

Taranaki Creative Fibre  Biennial Exhibition at  Percy Thomson Gallery, Stratford  2014

It is that exciting time of year when the Taranaki creative fibre members (currently 135) both men and women have been busy in their ‘studios’ mastering great works of art!

From the 4th -26th July these will be exhibited at the Percy Thompson Gallery in Stratford. The group consists of wonderfully talented weavers, knitters, spinners, felters, dyers and creative artists who work with fibre in all its forms to produce outstanding results. Many of the artists hold National awards and are experts in manipulating texture and form with exciting results .

They will be judged and prizes awarded by several supportive local and some not so local sponsors. The award categories range from design expertise to the use of colour and specific fibres such as silk, alpaca, flax, wool, linen and cotton including a recycled category which will surely be dazzling! There is also an award for a first time entrant to encourage new members and the TET Taranaki award for the most creative use of NZ design or materials, with particular reference to Taranaki.

In addition you will find exhibiting guest artist Mako Jones, a visiting Maori artist with a passion for raranga (weaving) who specialises in the use of muka (harakeke fibre) and is inspired by the love of Maori Art History and people. Mako moved from Auckland to live in Inglewood with her husband and two daughters. She studied design and art at Te Wananga o Raukawa, a journey which led her into the world of raranga. For Mako, the most important part of being a weaver is the ability to share and pass on the basic skills and knowledge of raranga to other people who want to learn and to support them as they develop this traditional skill.

This is a common thread within the creative fibre group, a collection of artists who welcome new members and run regular workshops to share their skills. Many of the items will be for sale and will certainly demonstrate excellence in their fields. The variety is garaunteed to surprise entertain you!

Entry is free, donations are welcome. Percy Thomson Gallery, Prospero Place, Miranda st, Stratford is open 10.30 am - 4.00pm weekdays and 10.30 am - 3.00pm weekends.

There are 44 FELT entries to this exhibition!
