Shibori Felt by Bernice Mitchell

When our Taranaki Creative Fibre newsletter came out with instructions that we were all to wear a Fascinator to our AGM and Area Day I decided to go against my natural practical self and have a play day. so at the next workshop day it was wonderful to sit and chat with other fibrey women, mostly spinning and knitting and play with ideas I'd had, with shibori and layers etc.

I set out to create this Whimsy (the original name for a Fascinator).

Using marbles, both buried then snipped open and tied into prefelt, layers and bound pipe cleaners and an enormous marble in the centre with already felted 'stamens' tucked inside. It created quite a lot of interest I can tell you, especially in my bright colours. Obviously this was no light weight whispy Whimsy, no a much more robust article was created. Some of the pipe cleaners made a desperate bid for freedom and emerged from the bottom of the creation, but I managed to retain a couple to be able to bend them as I desired.

After a few days to allow the shibori marbled felt to dry in the sun I untied it all, gave it some shape and voila! My Whimsy! With a daub of hot glue on a hair slip on the bottom, it sat beautifully and caught the interest (if not admiration) of many. One lady initially asked "Won't it be heavy with the marbles in it?", I did giggle and explain that you took them out once it was dry and the shape would remain.

Enjoy my Whimsical Creation won't you?
blessings, Bernice Mitchell
